The month of June is Lesbian and Gay Pride Month. There have been many celebrations to mark this historic event, including conventions, conferences, and protests and also rallies and protests. Gay and lesbian people have always been a diverse community that has challenged the societal notions regarding gender roles and sexual orientation from the beginning. Up until recently, LGBT (gay/lesbian/bisexual) people did not have a specific month in which to commemorate their existence, or to challenge societal beliefs about sexual orientation.
We celebrate Gay and Lesbian Pride Month in June because we’re united to defend our rights and advance our culture. One of the major steps towards gay and lesbian liberation was the Stonewall rebellion. This group of gay and leese freedom fighters were brutally beaten in the streets by New York police. It led to the creation of the Gay and Lesbian Rights Action Agenda. Their example led hundreds of Americans to fight for their rights.
To celebrate Gay and Lesbian Pride Month the LGBT community looks back at its history to find inspiration and remember the sacrifices made by those who have come before us. Many gay and lesbian people choose to commemorate their history in October for a variety of reasons. The first is that it is a time of World AIDS Day, which allows people to appreciate how far the fight for equality and civil rights of gays has advanced. Many people are looking to know where they will get married next year and who are planning to marry in the coming year in order to plan their future.
Because gay marriage is legal in numerous states across America, the Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade is a symbol of acceptance and tolerance within our country. The parade will begin in New York City at the Stonewall Inn and end at the Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade in Washington D.C. Every year the parade grows bigger and more vibrant as more people join in to show their love for the Gay and Lesbian community. The Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade’s start point is the Stonewall Inn. It is followed by a large number of people who march down the street. The crowd cheers and waves colorful flags as the parade passes through. The atmosphere is lively and joyful as people take in the atmosphere and fun of the Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade.
Southern State University Pomeranian Village located on the campus of the school, also celebrates Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. Faculty and students organize events such as the annual Gay and Lesbian Pride picnic. A large number of people attend these events. At the picnic the food is served and people socialize as they sit on the grassy space that is situated outside the village hall. People are able to relax and talk about how the Gay/Lesbian community can continue to fight for their civil rights. The event will feature people from the Gay and Lesbian community as well as local residents.
Gay and Lesbian Pride Month are worldwide recognized as a month of celebration and awareness about the Gay and Lesbian community. Local chapters throughout the country to celebrate this special occasion with fantastic celebrations and activities.
